What online kinesiology can and cannot assess

A practical explanation of virtual kinesiology assessment, its limits, and when in-person or medical care may be the appropriate next step.

Online kinesiology can provide useful assessment and rehabilitation, but it is not a remote substitute for every kind of examination or healthcare service.

The useful question is not whether virtual care works for everyone. It is whether the available information, technology, setting, and tasks are sufficient for this person and this decision. Suitability should be considered before the appointment and throughout care.

What a Registered Kinesiologist can assess online

Kinesiology scope in Ontario includes the assessment of human movement and performance and its rehabilitation and management. By video, a Registered Kinesiologist may review your health and activity history, goals, present ability, exercise tolerance, available space, and the demands you need to manage.

When appropriate, the session may include observation of movement, functional tasks, and self-directed tests that can be performed safely and seen clearly. The kinesiologist can discuss assessment findings and clinical impressions and use them to develop or revise an individualized rehabilitation plan.

The exact assessment is not fixed. Camera position, floor space, equipment, support from another person, privacy, connection quality, current symptoms, and the task itself can all affect what is reasonable to do online.

What online kinesiology cannot provide

  • Hands-on examination, palpation, or treatment.
  • Imaging, laboratory testing, medication advice, or surgical advice.
  • A definitive disease or disorder diagnosis.
  • Medical clearance for sport, work, or another activity.
  • Emergency response or urgent medical assessment.
  • A complete view of tasks or environmental demands that cannot be demonstrated safely and clearly by video.

These limits do not automatically make online care unsuitable. They clarify when the information available online is enough to proceed and when another service is needed.

When an in-person or medical assessment may be recommended

A recommendation for other care may arise before booking, during an assessment, or later in rehabilitation. It may be appropriate when important information cannot be gathered by video, the person cannot participate safely, the concern is outside kinesiology scope or the kinesiologist’s competence, or another regulated professional is better positioned to answer the question.

Either the client or the kinesiologist may pause or stop a virtual session. Referral does not mean that the online assessment failed; it is one way of matching the person’s needs with the appropriate setting and professional.

For emergencies

Online kinesiology is not emergency care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department when immediate help is needed.

What to expect before and during an appointment

  1. 1. Service-area check. Eventus currently provides care only to people physically located in Ontario at the time of service.
  2. 2. Technology and privacy. You need a device, connection, and space that support a private and usable video session.
  3. 3. Consent and suitability. The kinesiologist explains the online format, material risks and limits, and available alternatives so you can decide whether to proceed.
  4. 4. Assessment and plan. The session gathers appropriate information, discusses findings and clinical impressions, and identifies a plan or another care pathway.

If you are considering online care for football, wrestling, or a combat or contact sport, read the contact-sport service-fit guide.
